The AMCAT is a computer-adaptive aptitude test run by SHL India and used by 3,000+ employers in India as a fresher hiring screen. Cognizant’s GenC program, one of the largest fresh-graduate hiring tracks in Indian IT, routes all its fresher screening through AMCAT before any technical or HR round.

This article covers the full test structure, the most-repeated question types in each compulsory section with one worked example each, and a 4-week prep plan. For the live coding modules, see the AMCAT Automata guide and the AMCAT Automata Fix guide. For the spoken-English module, the AMCAT SVAR guide covers that section in full.

AMCAT Test Structure

The test is computer-adaptive: each correct answer pulls the next question from a harder bracket, each wrong answer from an easier one. Your final score is a percentile based on both the count of correct answers and the difficulty of the questions you faced. Accuracy matters more than raw speed.

Compulsory modules (all candidates):

SectionQuestions (approx)Time (approx)
English Language1818 min
Quantitative Aptitude1620 min
Logical Reasoning1416 min

Optional modules (employer-configured):

ModuleTypical forWhat it tests
Computer ProgrammingIT-track candidatesCS knowledge MCQs: data types, OOP, complexity
AutomataCoding roles2 problems in C, C++, Java, or Python, written from scratch
Automata FixCognizant GenC, Wipro3 debugging problems in C, C++, or Java
SVARVoice-process roles16 to 20 min spoken-English AI-graded test

SHL India adjusts exact question counts and time allocations by hiring cycle, so treat the numbers above as planning frames rather than fixed specs.

GenC Pro / Elevate₹6.5–9.0 LPA

Cognizant launched its Graduate Program 2026 under the GenC brand with structured training and real project exposure from day one.

English Language Section

Most-repeated question types:

  • Reading Comprehension: a passage of 200 to 400 words followed by 3 to 5 inference and detail questions
  • Sentence Correction: identify the grammatically incorrect segment in an underlined sentence
  • Synonyms and Antonyms: vocabulary in context, not isolated definitions
  • Fill in the Blanks: test prepositions, conjunctions, and article usage
  • Error Identification: one of four underlined segments contains the grammatical error

The adaptive pattern means harder comprehension passages follow correct early answers. Spend no more than 90 seconds on any single question. On dense passages, answer the factual detail questions first and return to inference questions if time allows.

Worked Example: Sentence Correction

  • Q: “Each of the managers are responsible for their own budgets.”
  • Identified error: “each” is a singular subject; the verb must agree with it.
  • Corrected sentence: “Each of the managers is responsible for their own budgets.”
  • Rule: “Each”, “every”, and “either” always take a singular verb in standard grammar, regardless of the prepositional phrase that follows.

Quantitative Aptitude Section

Most-repeated question types:

  • Profit and Loss: cost price, selling price, marked price, successive discounts
  • Time, Speed, and Distance: average speed, relative speed, trains passing each other
  • Time and Work: combined work rates, pipe-and-cistern variants
  • Percentages and Ratios: increase/decrease, ratio comparison, mixture problems
  • Number Series: arithmetic progression, geometric progression, and mixed-pattern sequences

The adaptive Quant section penalises error clusters. A careless arithmetic mistake on an easy question shifts you into a lower-difficulty bracket for several subsequent questions. Use mental approximation to sense-check answers on percentage and ratio problems before confirming.

Worked Example: Profit and Loss

  • Q: A trader buys goods for ₹400 and sells them for ₹480. Find the profit percentage.
  • Step 1: Profit = Selling Price minus Cost Price = 480 minus 400 = ₹80
  • Step 2: Profit % = (Profit divided by Cost Price) multiplied by 100 = (80 divided by 400) multiplied by 100
  • Step 3: = 0.20 multiplied by 100 = 20%
  • Verification: 20% of 400 = 80; 400 + 80 = 480 — matches the selling price ✓

Logical Reasoning Section

Most-repeated question types:

  • Coding-Decoding: letter-shift patterns, symbol substitution, reverse-alphabet codes
  • Blood Relations: multi-step family tree problems requiring a diagram to track
  • Syllogisms: test validity of a conclusion drawn from two given premises
  • Number Series: identify the pattern (add, multiply, alternate operations) and find the missing term
  • Seating Arrangement: linear or circular seating with 3 to 6 conditional constraints

Blood relations and coding-decoding together account for the largest share of the Logical section in most AMCAT configurations. Both respond to the same preparation approach: practise drawing a quick diagram before attempting to answer, rather than working purely in your head.

Worked Example: Coding-Decoding

  • Q: In a certain code, FACE is written as GBDF. How would PREP be coded in the same code?
  • Step 1: Identify the pattern. F(6) becomes G(7), A(1) becomes B(2), C(3) becomes D(4), E(5) becomes F(6). Each letter shifts one position forward in the alphabet.
  • Step 2: Apply the pattern to PREP. P(16) becomes Q(17), R(18) becomes S(19), E(5) becomes F(6), P(16) becomes Q(17).
  • Answer: QSFQ
  • Verification: each position shift of +1 confirmed against alphabet index ✓

Computer Programming and Optional Modules

The Computer Programming module tests CS knowledge as multiple-choice questions, not live coding. IT-track employers configure it alongside the compulsory sections. Common topics:

  • Data types, type conversion, and operator precedence in C, C++, and Java
  • Arrays and strings: indexing, traversal, and common built-in operations
  • Functions, recursion, and call stack behaviour
  • OOP concepts: inheritance, polymorphism, method overriding, encapsulation
  • Time and space complexity: Big-O notation, comparison of common sorting algorithms

This section rewards consistent revision over last-minute cramming. Work through a standard CS fundamentals textbook or online course in the weeks before the test rather than grinding full coding problems.

For live coding preparation:

  • Automata (write from scratch): The AMCAT Automata guide covers the two-question format, the four-axis grading criteria, and the 4-week preparation structure.
  • Automata Fix (debug existing code): The AMCAT Automata Fix guide covers all three question types and explains why Cognizant specifically uses this module for GenC screening.
  • SVAR (spoken English): The AMCAT SVAR guide covers the six sections, AI grading criteria, and a 7-day prep plan for voice-process roles.

AMCAT Scoring and What Companies See

AMCAT scores are reported as percentile bands per section on a 0 to 900 scale. Companies receive a recruiter dashboard with each candidate’s section-level percentile, an overall AMCAT eligibility classification, and a validity flag showing how long the score remains active. Scores are valid for one year from the test date.

No cutoffs are published. Recruiters configure private thresholds that shift by cycle and role. General planning frames:

  • IT services entry-level (Cognizant GenC, Wipro): shortlist typically above the 70th percentile per compulsory section.
  • Mid-tier product companies: tend to want the 80th percentile or higher on Quantitative and Logical.
  • Clearing AMCAT is the shortlisting gate, not the offer. Technical and HR rounds follow for shortlisted candidates.

4-Week Preparation Plan

Work all three compulsory sections in parallel from week one. Finishing one section before starting another wastes the cross-reinforcement that comes from spacing practice across topics.

WeekFocusTarget
Week 1English: Comprehension + Sentence Correction; Quant: Percentages + Ratios20 questions per topic, review every error
Week 2Quant: Profit-Loss + Time-Speed-Distance; Logical: Coding-Decoding + Blood Relations20 questions per topic, timed at 1.5 min per question
Week 3Logical: Syllogisms + Seating Arrangements; Computer Programming: Data Types + OOPFull-section timed mock per topic
Week 4Two full AMCAT timed mocks (all compulsory sections); review all errors; revisit weak topicsBoth mocks above planning-frame percentile for your target company

Take mocks under realistic conditions: no pauses, no notes, timer running. Review every wrong answer before the next session, because error clusters in the adaptive engine lower your subsequent question difficulty.

Cognizant plans to hire up to 25,000 freshers in 2026 as part of its AI-driven workforce expansion. Clearing the AMCAT compulsory sections puts you on the GenC shortlist. Getting to the GenC Pro tier is determined by the technical round, and those rounds increasingly ask candidates to demonstrate how they work with AI tools, not just whether they know the syntax.

TinkerLLM, at ₹299 for the launch tier, lets you build and ship a working AI feature in a few hours. That’s the kind of concrete demo that separates candidates in a technical interview.

Frequently asked questions

What is AMCAT and who runs it?

AMCAT stands for Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test. It is run by SHL India, which acquired Aspiring Minds in 2019. The test is accepted by 3,000+ employers in India as a fresher hiring screen. Recruiter emails often say 'AMCAT' while the test portal may still show Aspiring Minds branding; both refer to the same assessment platform.

How many sections does the AMCAT have?

Three sections are compulsory for all candidates: English Language (approximately 18 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (approximately 16 questions), and Logical Reasoning (approximately 14 questions). Optional modules are added by employers based on the job profile. For IT roles, the optional stack typically includes Computer Programming MCQs and either Automata (write from scratch) or Automata Fix (debug existing code).

Which companies hire through AMCAT?

Cognizant uses AMCAT as the screening gate for its GenC fresher program. Other IT services employers on the platform include Wipro, Infosys BPM, Tech Mahindra, and several mid-size IT firms. The platform also serves non-IT sectors including BFSI, logistics, and e-commerce. A full list of current companies is available at myamcat.com.

What is a good AMCAT score?

AMCAT reports percentile scores per section on a 0 to 900 scale, not a single aggregate. Most IT services companies shortlist candidates above the 70th to 80th percentile in each compulsory section. Employers do not publish cutoffs publicly, and the bar shifts by hiring cycle and role. Aim to maximise each section percentile rather than targeting a single total number.

How is AMCAT different from company-run placement tests like TCS NQT?

AMCAT is a third-party platform test; companies subscribe and use scores for shortlisting. Cognizant uses AMCAT (including Automata Fix for coding) as its primary GenC screening before its own technical and HR rounds. TCS NQT and similar tests are owned and run by the company directly. The underlying aptitude and coding skills you build for AMCAT transfer cleanly to company-specific tests.

Can I retake the AMCAT?

Yes. AMCAT scores are valid for one year from the test date, and retakes are available as a paid option. Most recruiters see your most recent score, not your highest, so retake only after targeted preparation that addresses specific weak sections from your previous attempt.

Does Cognizant use Automata Fix in its AMCAT hiring?

Yes. Cognizant's GenC hiring process uses Automata Fix, which presents buggy code to correct rather than asking you to write from scratch. It is an optional module configured by the employer. The AMCAT Automata Fix guide on FACE Prep covers all three question types and the grading criteria in detail.
