The AMCAT has 4 mandatory sections and one optional domain module. Know which question types repeat and 80% of the preparation becomes predictable. SHL India (which acquired Aspiring Minds in 2019) administers the exam as a computer-adaptive assessment, with the most active use in IT-services, KPO, and product companies that don’t run their own written tests.
AMCAT Test Pattern: What the Exam Actually Looks Like
The exam has five sections: four mandatory, one optional.

The Quantitative, Verbal, and Logical sections are computer-adaptive: question difficulty adjusts in real time based on your performance. Two students can sit the same AMCAT and face very different questions; scores are reported as percentiles, not raw marks.
There is no negative marking. A wrong answer costs you nothing beyond the lost opportunity to answer correctly.

Quantitative Ability: Most Repeated Topics and Sample Questions
This section tests arithmetic and basic algebra under time pressure. The difficulty level sits between Class 10 and Class 12 board maths. 25 questions in 35 minutes means roughly 84 seconds per question, enough time if you’re not deriving formulas from scratch.

The time-work family (pipes, wages, combined work) shows up at least twice per test. The formula for combined work: if A completes a task in x days and B in y days, together they complete it in (x*y)/(x+y) days. Know this cold.

Verbal Ability: High-Frequency Question Types
25 questions in 25 minutes. That’s 60 seconds per question, the tightest section in the test. Reading comprehension passages can eat 3 to 4 minutes each, so most students save those for last.

24 questions in 35 minutes. This section rewards pattern recognition. Dedicated practice on 4 to 5 core formats is sufficient.

For blood-relations questions, draw a family tree on scratch paper immediately. For syllogisms, use the standard Venn-diagram elimination method.
AMCAT Score Report: What the Output Tells Recruiters
After the test, you receive a detailed score report via myamcat.com. The report contains three key outputs:
- Industry Fitment: labels you for role clusters: IT product, IT services, KPO, BPO, and so on, based on your combined sectional percentiles.
- Company Tier: indicates eligibility tier (Tier 1, 2, or 3 companies) based on cut-off bands.
- Section Percentiles: separate percentile scores for each mandatory section.
Recruiters receiving AMCAT scores typically set minimum percentile thresholds per section.
Key thresholds companies commonly apply (these are typical cut-off ranges, not official guarantees):
- Quantitative Ability: above 70th percentile for most IT-services shortlists
- Verbal Ability: above 60th percentile; roles requiring strong communication often set a higher bar
- Logical Reasoning: above 65th percentile for most shortlists
Scores are valid for 2 years. A 45-day cooling period applies before a retake. Most students who score below target on the first attempt focus retake prep on the specific section where they fell short, not on reattempting the whole syllabus.

How AI Awareness Connects to Your AMCAT Score
Clearing the AMCAT percentile cut-off gets you to the next round. What happens in that round: technical interview, group discussion, communication assessment. These stages increasingly include questions about AI tools and AI-assisted workflows.

Is AMCAT an adaptive test? What does that mean in practice?
Yes, the core sections are computer-adaptive. Question difficulty adjusts based on your previous answer. Getting an early question right means the next question is harder. Your final percentile reflects both the difficulty of questions you faced and how many you answered correctly.
How is the Personality Inventory scored — can you fail it?
The Personality Inventory is not scored as right-or-wrong. It evaluates behavioral traits and work preferences. Recruiters use it to filter for role fit, not general competence. Answer honestly and consistently — inconsistent responses flag easily.
What percentile is considered good for IT-services shortlists?
A Quantitative Ability percentile above 70 is a commonly cited threshold for IT-services roles. Verbal and Logical cut-offs vary by company but typically sit between 60 and 75.
Does AMCAT have negative marking?
No. The AMCAT does not apply negative marking. Leaving a question unanswered is not penalised, so always attempt every question even if you are guessing.
How long is an AMCAT score valid?
AMCAT scores are valid for 2 years from the date of the test. You can retake the exam after a 45-day cooling period if you want to improve your score.
Can students with an active backlog appear for AMCAT?
Yes. AMCAT does not check backlogs at registration. Individual companies set their own academic eligibility criteria, so check each company's shortlisting policy separately.
How many questions come from HCF and LCM in AMCAT Quant?
HCF and LCM typically appear as 2 to 3 questions in the 25-question Quantitative Ability section. Combined with time-work and profit-loss, these four topics account for roughly half the section.
