HCLTech’s fresher selection runs three consecutive stages: online written test, technical interview, and HR round. Clearing all three is required before an offer is made.

HCLTech Recruitment 2026: The Three Rounds at a Glance

The stages run in sequence, each filtering for a different set of skills.

StageFormatDurationWhat it filters
Online Written Test60 MCQs, four sections60 minutesAptitude and CS fundamentals
Technical InterviewOne-on-one, structured30 to 45 minutesProgramming depth and project knowledge
HR RoundOne-on-one, conversational20 to 30 minutesCommunication, confidence, cultural fit

HCLTech recruits through both on-campus drives (via college placement cells) and off-campus portals. The selection stages are identical in both modes. For the off-campus application process and track-specific eligibility, see the HCL off-campus drive for freshers guide.

Eligibility Criteria

HCLTech applies consistent eligibility requirements for its standard BE/BTech fresher track:

  • Degree: B.E. or B.Tech in CSE, IT, ECE, or EEE (Mechanical and Civil are included in some drives; check each job posting)
  • Academic: minimum 60% aggregate in Class 10, Class 12, and the engineering degree
  • Active backlogs: none permitted at the time of joining
  • Education gap: maximum one year allowed between qualifying examinations

Candidates with an education gap above one year or with active backlogs are typically not shortlisted. TechBee, HCLTech’s programme for post-12th candidates, uses separate eligibility criteria and a different recruitment pathway. See the HCL off-campus BE/BTech drive guide for how the TechBee track differs from the standard engineering fresher stream.

Stage 1: Online Written Test

The online written test runs 60 questions in 60 minutes. All four sections carry equal weight with no negative marking.

SectionQuestionsCore TopicsReported Cut-off
Quantitative Aptitude15Number system, time and work, profit and loss, probability70%
Logical Reasoning15Number series, coding-decoding, direction sense, data sufficiency70%
Verbal Ability15Reading comprehension, sentence correction, synonyms and antonyms70%
Technical15Data structures, OOPs, OS, DBMS, code output prediction70%

Sections are evaluated independently, so a strong Quantitative score cannot compensate for a weak Verbal score. Each section requires approximately 11 correct answers out of 15 to clear the reported cut-off.

The Technical section varies by branch. CSE and IT candidates face data structures, OOPs, SQL, and code output-tracing in C or Java. ECE candidates typically see a mix of CS fundamentals and digital electronics. For a section-by-section breakdown with topic lists and preparation strategies, see the HCL aptitude test pattern and syllabus guide.

Stage 2: Technical Interview

The technical interview is one-on-one, typically 30 to 45 minutes. The panel member is usually from an engineering or delivery team, not an HR screener.

For CSE and IT Candidates

Questions cluster around five areas, roughly in order of frequency:

  • Data Structures: arrays, linked lists, trees, graphs, sorting and searching algorithms
  • OOPs: inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, with a small design problem
  • OS: process scheduling, CPU scheduling algorithms (FCFS, SJF, Round Robin), deadlocks and their conditions
  • DBMS: normalization up to 3NF, types of joins, SQL queries with GROUP BY and HAVING clauses
  • Code writing: some interviewers ask for a short function in C, C++, Java, or Python on paper or a shared screen

The overlap with the aptitude test’s Technical section is intentional. Preparing the Technical section of the online test and preparing for the technical interview are, for practical purposes, the same preparation activity.

For ECE and EEE Candidates

Non-CS branches face a different profile:

  • Project walk-through: expect detailed questions on every project listed on your resume
  • Elective coursework: if you took OS, networking, or a programming elective, those are fair game
  • AI and cloud awareness: some 2026 drives include basic questions on machine learning concepts or cloud service models

If your resume lists a project involving embedded systems, IoT, or signal processing, be ready to explain both the circuit-level and software decisions you made. Generic answers do not satisfy technical interviewers.

Preparation Approach

Three activities that deliver the most return before the technical round:

  • Revise OS, DBMS, and data structures from course notes. You need to be able to explain the concepts, not just recall the names.
  • Solve 20 to 30 code-output problems on paper, not just on an IDE. The same question type appears in the aptitude test’s Technical section.
  • Rehearse project explanations. Pick two projects from your resume and practise explaining them in four sentences: what it does, what technologies you used, what problem it solved, and what you would improve.

Stage 3: HR Round

The HR round is typically the final stage. It runs 20 to 30 minutes and does not include technical assessment.

What the HR Round Assesses

Interviewers check three things: communication clarity, motivation for joining HCLTech, and whether answers are structured and honest under mild pressure.

Common question categories:

  • Introduction: “Tell me about yourself” (keep this under 90 seconds; end with why you’re interested in HCLTech)
  • Strengths and weaknesses: prepare two specific examples for each, not generic trait labels
  • Teamwork and conflict: scenario-based questions like “tell me about a time your team disagreed on an approach”
  • Career goals: where you see yourself in three to five years
  • Company knowledge: why HCLTech specifically, not just IT services in general

Preparation Approach

Two things differentiate candidates who clear the HR round from those who don’t:

They give specific answers, not generic ones. “I was the communication lead for a six-person final-year project” is stronger than “I have good communication skills.”

They know something concrete about HCLTech. Not every metric on the company’s website, but at least one recent development: a product initiative, a technology partnership, or an industry recognition. Scanning HCLTech’s press releases takes under an hour and pays off in a single specific answer that signals genuine interest.

HCLTech Packages in 2026

The selection process is identical for all fresher tracks. What changes is which track a candidate is evaluated for based on their profile.

TrackWho qualifies2026 Package
TechBeePost-12th standard candidatesTraining stipend for 12 months, full-time offer on conversion
Standard BE/BTechEngineering degree, 60% aggregate, no backlogs₹3.5–4.5 LPA
Elite AI-skilledBE/BTech with AI, GenAI, data engineering, or cybersecurity portfolio₹18–22 LPA

The ₹18–22 LPA figure comes from HCLTech’s 2026 fresher salary announcement as reported by The Hans India, the highest publicly disclosed AI premium for fresher hires in the IT services sector. TechBee participants can also pursue a four-year online BSc in Data Science and AI from IIT Guwahati, under the partnership HCLTech formalised in 2026 per their official press release.

The gap between the standard band and the elite band is not closed by clearing the aptitude test with a higher score. Both tracks clear the same 70% cut-off. What routes a candidate to the ₹18–22 LPA tier is what they present in the technical interview: a deployed AI project on GitHub, not just coursework knowledge. TinkerLLM is the fastest entry point for building that first project at ₹499.
