TCS Ninja is a hiring track, not a test name. The exam has been called TCS NQT (National Qualifier Test) since 2019, and the same test routes every candidate to one of three TCS pay tracks based on score.

What TCS Ninja means in the 2026 hiring cycle

Before 2019, TCS ran campus-specific written tests that varied by institution. The shift to a centralised NQT in 2019 replaced all of those with a single exam. Track assignment now happens entirely based on where your score lands, not on which application form you filled.

The three tracks and their 2026 CTC bands:

TrackCTCDeciding factor
TCS NinjaRs 3.5 to 3.9 LPAFoundation section NQT score
TCS DigitalRs 7.0 to 7.5 LPAHigher NQT cut-off plus advanced technical interview
TCS PrimeRs 9.0 to 11.0 LPATop NQT score plus extended interview with AI/data project review

One application, one exam, three possible outcomes. Students who searched “TCS Ninja recruitment process 2019” are looking at the right article. This is the updated guide for how the process works today.

Eligibility criteria for 2026 applicants

The Ninja track eligibility criteria:

  • Academic score: Minimum 60% aggregate or 6.0 CGPA in Class X, Class XII (or diploma, if applicable), and your degree. This applies to every semester across every qualification, not just the final year.
  • Backlogs: No more than 1 active backlog or arrear at the time of appearing for the NQT. If selected, all backlogs must be cleared before joining TCS.
  • Break in education: Any gap in studies must be declared. Breaks must not exceed 24 months in total, and extended time to clear exams is not counted as a valid gap reason.
  • Course type: Full-time courses only. Part-time and correspondence programmes are not eligible, though NIOS secondary qualifications are accepted if the rest of your study is full-time.
  • Prior work experience: Up to 2 years of prior work experience is permitted. More than 2 years makes you ineligible for the fresher track.
  • Age: 18 to 28 years at the time of application.
  • Eligible degrees: B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA, or M.Sc from any specialisation from a recognised university. CSE, ECE, EEE, IT, mechanical, civil — all are welcome.

One practical note on CGPA: TCS applications accept percentage entries only. Convert your CGPA to percentage using your university’s official formula before filling the application form.

How to apply: the TCS NextStep portal

The application is free. These are the four steps:

  • Step 1: Register on the TCS NextStep portal (ibegin.tcs.com) and select “IT” as your category.
  • Step 2: Complete the application form and click “Apply For Drive.”
  • Step 3: Select your preferred test mode (in-centre or remote) and confirm your slot.
  • Step 4: Check “Track Your Application” to confirm status shows “Applied for Drive.”

TCS communicates all test-related information, including the exact test date, through the registered email ID. Check the spam folder regularly after applying. Creating duplicate profiles is a common mistake. If two profiles exist for the same candidate, write to [email protected] for deletion before the test date.

TCS NQT test pattern for the Ninja track

The TCS NQT follows an Integrated Test Pattern with two mandatory parts:

PartDurationContent
Part A — Foundation75 minutesVerbal Ability, Reasoning Ability, Numerical Ability
Part B — Advanced115 minutesAdvanced Quant, Programming Logic, Coding

The Foundation section is what determines Ninja track eligibility. There is no negative marking in Part A, so attempting every question is the right strategy.

The three Foundation sub-sections test:

  • Verbal Ability: Reading comprehension, grammar usage, vocabulary, error spotting, and sentence completion. Around 24 questions.
  • Reasoning Ability: Number series, direction problems, blood relations, syllogisms, and coding-decoding. Around 30 questions.
  • Numerical Ability: Arithmetic, number systems, percentage, ratio and proportion, data interpretation, and basic statistics. Around 26 questions.

Digital and Prime candidates also sit Part B Advanced, which adds a programming logic section and two live coding problems. Part B coding accepts C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl.

For full syllabus details and how Foundation scores map to track cut-offs, see the TCS Ninja test pattern and syllabus guide. For worked aptitude questions across all three sub-sections, see the TCS NQT aptitude questions and solutions guide.

After the test: technical and HR interviews

Ninja-track shortlisting is based on Foundation score. Shortlisted candidates receive an invitation via their registered email ID with the interview schedule.

Technical Interview

This round covers programming fundamentals in C, C++, Java, or Python, along with basic data structures (arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues) and sorting algorithms. Interviewers also ask about your final-year or major project. Expect to write short code on screen. The round runs approximately 30 to 45 minutes with one or two interviewers. Common question types include reversing a linked list, implementing binary search, explaining the difference between stack and queue, and walking through the technical decisions in your project. Strong fundamentals in one language carry more weight than shallow familiarity with all four.

HR Interview

The HR round covers career goals, relocation flexibility, and offer acceptance. For Ninja track candidates, this round is rarely eliminatory unless there is a clear conflict on relocation or joining timeline. Knowing the expected TCS joining timeline (typically 3 to 6 months after offer) helps you answer these questions without hesitation.

Both rounds are typically conducted online. Results are communicated only to selected candidates via email.

For coding preparation specific to current TCS patterns, the TCS coding questions and answers guide has worked solutions for the types of problems that appear in the Technical Interview and Part B Advanced.

The AI hiring shift and what it means for your application

The Ninja track NQT does not test AI skills. That framing matters before anything else.

That said, TCS is reshaping its fresher mix. According to TCS CHRO Sudeep Kunnumal at the AI Impact Summit in March 2026, 60% of TCS’s FY26 fresher hires are AI-skilled, up from 10 to 15% three years ago. The Prime and Digital tiers, where AI skills are expected, grew by 50% in volume in that period. TCS also expanded its AI-skilled employee base to approximately 270,000 in one year, a 3x increase.

For Ninja track applicants, none of this changes the test prep. Study the Foundation pattern and clear the NQT cut-off. But for anyone targeting the Prime track (Rs 9.0 to 11.0 LPA), the extended technical round reviews an AI or data project you built. Financial Express reports TCS cut FY27 fresher intake to around 25,000, down from 44,000 in FY26. The reduction is concentrated in the Ninja tier, while Prime and Digital volumes held.

TCS Prime’s extended technical round expects an AI project you built and can discuss in depth. TinkerLLM (Rs 299) is the fastest path to a first LLM project: hands-on build sequences that take hours, not a full semester.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TCS NQT and TCS Ninja?

TCS Ninja is a hiring track and role designation, not the test name. Since 2019, all TCS tracks use the same exam called TCS NQT (National Qualifier Test). Your NQT score determines which track you qualify for.

What CGPA is needed for TCS Ninja 2026?

TCS Ninja requires a minimum aggregate of 60% or 6.0 CGPA across Class X, Class XII (or diploma, if applicable), and your degree. You must also have no more than 1 active backlog at the time of appearing for the NQT.

Is there negative marking in the TCS NQT for Ninja candidates?

There is no negative marking in the Foundation section of the TCS NQT. Attempt every question — an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero, whereas an educated guess gives you a chance at the mark.

How many interview rounds are there in TCS Ninja recruitment?

After clearing the NQT, Ninja track candidates typically face two rounds: a Technical Interview and an HR Interview. The Technical Interview covers programming fundamentals, data structures, and project work. Both rounds are usually conducted online.

Can students from ECE, EEE, or mechanical branches apply for TCS Ninja?

Yes. TCS Ninja accepts candidates from any engineering specialisation, including ECE, EEE, mechanical, civil, and IT, provided the degree is a full-time B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA, or M.Sc from a recognised university.

What CTC does the TCS Ninja track offer freshers in 2026?

The TCS Ninja track offers a starting CTC of Rs 3.5 to 3.9 LPA for freshers. The Digital track offers Rs 7.0 to 7.5 LPA and Prime offers Rs 9.0 to 11.0 LPA. Track assignment is based entirely on NQT performance.
