Online Test: Key Topics by Section

The online test covers four sections, each with 15 questions and a 15-minute time limit. Sections are evaluated independently, so a cut-off applies per section. Preparation works best when treated section by section, not as a single combined target.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section stays at Class 12 arithmetic level. No calculus, matrices, or engineering-level mathematics appears. Candidates strong in Class 12 Maths should find the difficulty manageable with focused topic drilling.

Number system, time and work, profit and loss, and time-speed-distance appear in every drive and account for the bulk of questions in this section. Spend the majority of Quantitative preparation on these four. Permutations, logarithms, and geometry are worth a single revision pass before the test, not extended drilling.

Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section tests thinking speed and pattern recognition. Candidates who are slower on this section should note that the per-question pace here is as tight as in Quantitative, with wider variety in question types.

  • Standard (medium frequency): Data sufficiency, direction sense

Data arrangements and coding-decoding account for the highest share of Logical Reasoning questions. Set-based arrangement questions (one setup, four or five sub-questions attached) appear regularly. Verbal Ability

Verbal questions move faster than Logical Reasoning for candidates with solid English reading fluency. Reading comprehension passages in the HCL test are short, typically 150 to 250 words, and answers are generally stated directly in the passage rather than requiring inference.

  • Core (highest frequency): Reading comprehension, sentence correction, vocabulary (synonyms and antonyms)

A focused list of 200 commonly tested synonyms and antonyms covers the majority of HCL Verbal vocabulary questions. Technical Section

The Technical section tests computer science fundamentals. CSE and IT students have coursework exposure; ECE and EEE students who covered OS, DBMS, or networking electives are not at a notable disadvantage.

Code output questions benefit from dedicated practice, not just concept revision. Knowing that arrays in C are zero-indexed is conceptual; recognising that a specific loop with an off-by-one boundary produces a particular output requires solving 30 to 40 output problems before the test date.

After the Online Test: Technical and HR Rounds

Candidates who clear the online test proceed to the technical interview, which typically runs 30 to 45 minutes. The panel covers programming fundamentals, data structures, OS, DBMS, and often a short live coding task.
